Happy New Year – Time to Get Started

Happy New Year, I don’t know about you, but I am ready for a new year. I am honored and humbled to be your 2017 EWTG President, and the Board of Directors and I are looking forward to providing you with new and meaningful professional development experiences in 2017.

It’s funny how winter can arrive so very quickly, but the shortest day of the season is already over, and before we know it, the gardeners among us will be preparing their flower and vegetable beds, starting seeds, and watching their small plants take root and grow. That’s really how it seems to me to be with so much of life – personally and certainly professionally - you begin by planning and preparing, you implement your plan, and if all goes “according to plan”, eventually you start to see and are able to take pride in the results of your efforts. This January, EWTG’s 2017 Board of Directors will be planning and preparing for the upcoming year. They will be scheduling events, identifying potential speakers, and looking for women who would like to try their hand at something new or lend their experience to something they have tried before and would like to have more time to perfect – committee members and chairs.

EWTG’s vision and mission statements include the following: “Developing leaders to create positive results in Texas government” and “Promote leadership in service to Texas by offering professional development opportunities.”

There are many leadership opportunities in EWTG, and I hope you will take advantage of this year’s opportunities to develop your own skills and enhance your career. Attend our monthly leadership luncheons and mini-courses; read our monthly newsletter, the EWTG Star; join an Executive Success Team, our small mentoring groups; participate on one of our many committees; take part in our community service projects and educational events; and make plans to attend the 31st Annual Professional Development Conference in November. Retirees can stay involved, too. Maybe you’re still identifying your “post-work” passions or looking for ways to give back through volunteer opportunities, or perhaps you now have time to mentor other members - meeting with other retirees will certainly spark ideas.

And members, be sure to save the date for our first big event, an early evening legislative reception on Tuesday, March 7, at the Capitol.

Your 2017 EWTG Board of Directors is a group of exception women, many of whom are repeat volunteers, albeit in new positions, and each of whom brings her own talents, skills, and experience to the organization, so we will be able to hit the ground running. We look forward to working together and with each of you to have a productive and rewarding 2017.

Clare Dyer
2017 EWTG President

It’s 2017 - Are You on the Right Career Path?

featuring

Shelley Pernot

True North Coaching and Development

Are you satisfied with your career path? Is your career meaningful? Not Sure? Come join us on January 25, 2017, to hear Shelley Pernot - a coach and trainer. She is dedicated to helping people tap into their inner compass, so they can live a life filled with passion and purpose. Shelly works with individuals who are seeking more fulfilment and meaning in their lives, as well as with leaders who wish to motivate and inspire their teams to create amazing results. She has learned the importance of these things the hard way, by blindly following a career path that didn’t suit her and making loads of embarrassing mistakes along the way. She eventually came to the conclusion that life is too short for things to be just okay.

Shelley is passionate about the topic of mindfulness, so much so that she has dubbed herself the Irreverent Guru of Mindfulness and integrates the practices into the work she does as a coach and trainer. Her vision is to bring mindfulness into the mainstream, and she regularly facilitates mindfulness workshops for busy professionals through organizations such as the Professional Development Center at the University of Texas. She is the author of Running on Empty: The Irreverent Guru’s Guide to Filling up with Mindfulness, launching in February 2017.

Online registration will end at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2017.

EWTG Highest honor...

It has been a little over a month since the selection of EWTG’s 2016 Woman of the Year (WOTY). We caught up with Dokpe Ogunsanya to hear how things were going on since her big day. Time captured in a photo. The trophy is on the shelf and the flowers have faded away, and her husband is still by her side. After the conference, she was busy with her annual Gala – an opportunity to give back to the community. Along with her studies, she has been a busy woman. She took a moment to speak with us and share with the EWTG family. Below is an interview with Dokpe as she reflected on life after her WOTY announcement, along with words from Carol Lauder whom Dokpe mentioned during her acceptance speech.

STAR: When you saw your pictures being displayed on the screen as woman of the year what was the first thing that went through your head?
DOKPE: OMG!
STAR: How do you feel about receiving the honor?
DOKPE: I was deeply touched, honored and grateful!

the training room

The Training Room will be moving to the Website this year. This will provide members with a continuous flow of learning opportunities. This also gives our members the opportunity to share learning opportunities with all of our readers. As we believe, learning is an activity that never ends and a must for success whether formal or informal.

Working on reducing chaos in your life this year? This month I would like to invite you to sign up for a free newsletter from the author of Getting Things Done – David Allen. This site also offers free resources in addition to classes and coaching sessions. We know chaos can stand in the way of getting things done and reduce productivity. We hate to handle some tasks due to associated drama or due to their perception of the level of difficulties. Below David Allen offers steps on taming the chaos.

Five Simple Steps That Apply Order to Chaos

  1. Capture – collect what has your attention.
  2. Clarify – process what it means.
  3. Organize – put it where it belongs.
  4. Reflect – review frequently.
  5. Engage – simply do.

Visit the site GTD for more details on how to apply order to chaos. Check out the site and see if there is anything that can help you grow and make your business world easier to manage.

If you have knowledge of educational opportunities that you would like to share, please contact us @ communication@ewtg.org. Please include “The Training Room” in your subject line. Let’s continue to grow and share. A true test of leadership is helping others succeed.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

Committee Volunteers Needed

Please look over the Committee Descriptions on the EWTG website and consider becoming more active in the organization.

Participating on a committee is a great way to support EWTG, learn new skills and to meet other interesting executive women. As with so many things, "the more you give, the more you get."
