President's Corner

Jennifer Dormer

As a member of EWTG, there are many benefits available to you. When you log into our website you will find the following on our member's benefit page :

  • Leadership Training
  • Professional Networking and Peer Support
  • Annual Professional Development
  • Conference Scholarships
Membership and active participation in EWTG offers you access to an array of opportunities and scholarships . Please note the words “active participation” and “scholarships”. As with any organization in order to enjoy all the benefits available to you… you must be active.

Scholarships are one such area that the membership benefits are enhanced. The more you participate in the organization’s activities as a member your scholarships opportunities increase. Scholarship awards are based on the member’s participation and commitment to EWTG.

So, what happens when you just joined EWTG…you haven’t had the opportunity to attend all the organization's activities and might not qualify for a scholarship the first year?

My Scholarship Advisory Committee met to discuss that exact question, and other scholarship ideas. With board approval, EWTG would like to offer a scholarship to one new member to attend the conference. We are opening up this opportunity to new members who have joined, or will join, between January 1, 2016 and September 30, 2016. If you are interested, please submit an email to with the following guidelines:

Write a paragraph (500 words or less) answering the following questions:
  • Tell us why you want to go to the conference.
  • What does the Conference theme (Exceptional Women Transforming Government - Celebrating our Diamond Anniversary with Four C’s of Leadership: Character, Competence, Collaboration, and Creativity) mean to you?
  • How do you plan to give back to or participate in EWTG next year?
We will draw the winner of the scholarship to this year’s conference, being held in November, the first part of October. So, if you just joined, or on the fence about joining, here is your opportunity to get a membership benefit that might not have been available right away for you before.

P.S. For those members who have been with us for more than this year, there is still time to send in an application for a scholarship. It could be for Training, Formal education, Leadership Texas or America (new this year), or for the Annual Conference in November.

Good luck!

2016 EWTG President

Authentic Leadership in a Legislative Environment
August 24, 2016 at 11:30 a.m.
Patricia V. Hayes, J.D.
Principal/Owner of PVH Consulting Group, LLC

Being a strong leader in any workplace or community continues to be an asset in today’s 21st century marketplace. However, all we have to do is turn on the television to see that despite its value, genuine leadership is at a crossroads in our society. How does one maintain an authentic and strong leadership profile today, particularly in a political or legislative environment?  For that matter, what does “authentic leadership” mean? During this session we will explore these questions as well as identify some key leadership tips to serve as guideposts during the upcoming legislative session.

President's updates for members
On September 1, 2016, there are several agencies that will be consolidating into HHSC. With consolidation come new email addresses for many of our members. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all members to update their email addresses on the EWTG website whenever there are updates.

While we communicate to members through social media, email is the biggest form of communication that EWTG has for getting information out to its members. We send our newsletters, broadcasts, member to member communication, etc. through email. If EWTG does not have your correct email, you could miss out on valuable information.

To update your email address:

  1. Open our website at
  2. Sign in at the top of the screen.
  3. Your profile should be visible. Click on the [EDIT] link on the Professional Information bar.
  4. Update your email and save. (You are also able to update any other information that you see might have changed)
communication survey plans
The 2016 EWTG Communication Survey Plans are still under development. The team will focus on question #2 – “What type of content would you like to see more of from EWTG?” We would like to see how we can apply this to the newsletter and the website. We are still exploring options to meet your request. In the upcoming months we hope to layout a more detailed plan.

Please let us hear from you concerning the new look of the newsletters and website. We have been tweaking. You may reach out to the communications team at any time by emailing us at We welcome your comments and suggestions. There is always room for improvement.

community service - ewtg goes back-to-school
EWTG will be hosting a school supply drive during the month of August to benefit the girls at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders.    The Ann Richards School (ARS) is an all-girls public school serving grades 6 – 12 for the Austin Independent School District.

Governor Ann Richards was instrumental in developing the school’s vision. Founded to give young women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds the skills and confidence necessary to pursue college educations and careers, it now stands as one of the largest single-gender public schools in the nation and a tribute to the enduring legacy of Governor Richards.

learning tips - internet safety
EWTG STAR has provided information on several types of social media options available in the past months. We started with those in which EWTG is currently using and included other types to explore. We want to be responsible in our offering by providing some safety tips. We want to help increase your social media footprints, but most of all we want you to be safe on the information highway.

The world of social media offers many benefits and dangers. While traveling on the information highway one must always think safety. Observe all warning signs, act responsible, and keep an eye on those who are travelling with you. Make your trip an enjoyable one. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) offers several tips for your social media journey.

EWTG Membership & LBJ EMPL Reception Follow-up
The EMPL/EWTG joint reception was a huge success because of YOU! Thanks to all who were able to attend. Your presence together with your active participation made the event memorable. We added seven new members to our organization that evening!

We are most grateful to Dr. Karl Brooks and THE EXECUTIVE MASTERS IN PUBLIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM distinguished faculties, staff and students for actively participating and collaborating with us in sponsoring the event. Thank you for the opportunity to connect with your community and learn about the EMPL program.

Leadership Texas Scholarships
I am one of the extremely lucky women who were selected to receive scholarships to attend Leadership Texas 2016. I learned about the Leadership Texas program from several of the friends I have made through EWTG.  At the time of my application I wasn't real sure what I was getting myself into, I just knew that everyone who had attended the program spoke highly about their experiences all the time.  It was these same friends who encouraged me to apply for the scholarship through EWTG, and I am so thankful I took their advice.  It was this scholarship that ultimately allowed me to attend this awesome and memorable program.

Each year the staff of Leadership Women selects a group of women as diverse as the State of Texas.  The Leadership Texas class of 2016 consists of 84 women from across the state representing almost every industry you can think of.  This year's theme is "The Future of Community: A State of Possibilities."  So far we have traveled to San Antonio and Amarillo; our next destination will be Corpus Christi in September and we will conclude the year in November here in Austin, our beautiful capital city.

Quarterly Scholarships

EWTG scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis to those wanting an opportunity for professional advancement or personal growth. All interested members are encouraged to apply; financial need is not a factor. Take a moment to treat yourself to a course you have been putting off or a conference you would love to attend.

Guidelines for qualifying for a scholarship and applications are available on the EWTG website at Email your 2016 second quarter application to the Scholarship Committee by 5:00 p.m. on September 30, 2016.

EWTG Board Meetings

The EWTG Board holds its monthly meetings at the Mitte Carriage House in Austin on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The agenda for each meeting will be posted on EWTG's website by noon on the Monday before the meeting.

A summary of the board meeting minutes is also posted on the website.

Committee Volunteers Needed

Please look over the Committee Descriptions on the EWTG website and consider becoming more active in the organization.

Participating on a committee is a great way to support EWTG, learn new skills and to meet other interesting executive women. As with so many things, "the more you give, the more you get."
