President's Corner

Of course, here in Central Texas, I don’t believe summer ever ended from last summer. I’m not sure the winter we had could really be called winter…maybe fall? Officially, though, summer began on June 20 with a full Moon, also commonly known as Strawberry Moon, which coincided with the June Solstice. The 2 events haven't occurred on the same day since 1967 and will not coincide again until 2062. Along with summer starting, kids are out of school and vacations are in full swing. There are pool parties, BBQs, fireworks, you name it.

While vacations and summer parties are happening, EWTG board members and conference committees are really starting to ramp up on their tasks. Our conference in November will be here before we know it. Currently there are some areas that could use member support. The Call to Presenters will close on July 8th. We still have room for applications for those who are interested in speaking on professional development at our conference. The program committee is working hard to solidify who our breakout session speakers will be at the conference so we can get the Early Bird registration open at the end of July.

Exhibitors, Silent Auction items and sponsorships are still open for additional support. If you know a business or individual who might be interested in exhibiting at the conference, providing an auction item or even sponsoring our successful conference event, please let us know. We will gladly contact that business or individual.

We hope that even with your busy summer schedules, you will also continue to enjoy our monthly luncheons and mini-courses, as well as, the membership event on July 14th.

I wanted to also share my newest babies…proud mama. A pair of house finches decided my hanging plant that my son gave me for Mother’s Day was a great nursery. Once I realized it, the nest was built and eggs were laid. I couldn’t turn these finches away.   Here are pictures of the eggs and then the week old babies.  I’m sure you can see that poor plant died. But the life that grew over it, is worth it.

Communication Survey Results

The 2016 EWTG Communication Survey showed that most members preferred to be emailed information whether it was an announcement about an upcoming event or a copy of the monthly newsletter. However, they only invited or forwarded such emails to non-members a few times a year.

The EWTG website and social media were the preferred method of communication for only about 8% of EWTG responders. However, for those who did use social media, Facebook far outweighed any other site. LinkedIn was the second best method for engaging members on social media and is the preferred source for news about members’ professions. Members requested additional information about LinkedIn groups and how to utilize use of LinkedIn as a networking tool.

EWTG Conference Volunteers
Your Service & Skills Are Needed

With Conference only five months away, the Conference Committee is looking for volunteers on several of its committees. It takes a team to put on a successful, professional development conference. Our Chairs work with Committees of volunteers to assist with finding presenters, exhibitors, silent auction items, etc.

Volunteering on any one of the EWTG Committees is rewarding and fulfilling in many ways. However, when you are a part of the Annual Conference Committee, it takes volunteering to an entirely different level. As a volunteer on the Conference Committee, you will have the opportunity to understand all of the behind-the-scenes activities and responsibilities that are required to bring the conference to fruition.

From the Director's Chair

As Secretary/Treasurer for EWTG, my main responsibility is paying the bills and tracking the flow of money in and out of the bank accounts. My position is a two year commitment, the first serving as Secretary/Treasurer and the second as the organization’s Financial Officer. Currently my duties include: monitoring and reconciling the bank accounts, reimbursing members for approved expenses, disbursing scholarship awards, and paying any bills that come up as a result of running an organization.

This year we are transitioning from hand written checks (yes I write them by hand) to an electronic approval and disbursement system. I must say, writing my first couple of checks was an adventure. At home I write maybe one or two checks a year but last month I wrote ten checks just for EWTG alone! I look forward to helping this organization revamp the way we do business with regards to paying its bills and tracking the flow of money in and out of the bank accounts.

What Are You Reading?

While browsing on the Business Insider page, I came across Amazon editor’s top 100 books for leadership and success. In the article, one of Amazon’s senior editor stated the books were chosen based on how the books help people plan for their futures and/or deal better with their present. I decide to review the list and share with the women of EWTG.

Business Insider’s author Shana Lebowitz stated that the list of authors were not your typical business leaders. Some push the envelope. Below are the top 10 books Amazon editors’ chose ranked by Shana for Business Insider. Check out the top 25 books and the article on the Business Insider site. I actually had read some of the books on the list. See if any of your recent reading made the list.
