Jennifer Dormer

I have mentioned in prior articles about membership with EWTG. I’m sure if you have talked to me about it and wondered if it would be a value to you, then I have told you that “you get what you put into it"

A great example of this statement would be signing a year contract with a gym. I’m sure there are many of you who have done this at some point in your lives or know someone who has. We got all excited about starting that gym membership; we put our money down and signed a contract for the year. We go several times and then stop going because something else comes up. We are busy women, right! I know when I did this exact thing many years ago, I felt awful each month because they were taking that monthly fee out and I was stuck in a contract still. It wasn’t a value to me anymore because I wasn’t putting in the time to get to the gym but yet I was still paying for it.

What EWTG membership gives you is a lot of value for the money…if you take advantage of these opportunities. And there are many.  Read More about EWTG Membership Advantages

Our goal is to provide the best value for your membership.

The President’s Updates for Members

At our March 23rd luncheon at the Austin Women’s Club, members will be voting on a by-law amendment. The Board of Directors voted at our February board meeting to amend Article XIII: Quorum.

The by-laws also require a membership vote at a regular meeting which will take place during the first few minutes of the March luncheon.

Current sentence in the by-laws:
Section Two: A quorum of the Board of Directors shall be five officers.
Membership will vote to amend the sentence to:
Section Two: A quorum of the Board of Directors shall be a majority of the officers.

Be sure to attend the March 23rd luncheon and cast your vote.

Holiday Luncheon

For many years, EWTG has held the Holiday Luncheon at the Green Pastures Restaurant. Unfortunately, the restaurant is under new ownership and is going through renovations into November this year. They are not taking reservations for December until the renovations are completed. That means there is no guarantee that they will be done by December or that we would be able to secure a date and time in December.

With that in mind, we began looking for other locations. We contacted many great restaurants and hotels. We ran into issues with high prices, no parking or paid parking, buffets offered instead of plated lunches, etc. Fortunately, Austin Women’s Club (where we have our monthly luncheons) has offered up their location for our event. They are in the price range, have parking, and will be providing a plated lunch with two sides. More information about date and time will be provided closer to the event.

Membership Director

Dear EWTG Members and Prospective Members:

I am super excited to chair the Member Services and Retiree Committees. Our primary mission is to recruit, retain and provide services to the membership. There have been a lot of fluctuations in our membership enrollments over the years due to several factors. Our membership total at the end of 2015 was 389 and our goal is to increase it to 500 this year with your help. We have fabulous membership drive activities planned for you including: Evening with the Stars (EWTG Cruise on the Lake), Duck Adventure, Special Membership Campaign, New Members Reception/Orientation, etc.

Please email me if you are interested in joining the membership team. Below is the synopsis of the two committees working together to achieve the monumental task of growing this great organization!

I look forward to seeing you and working with you to grow, empower and move our membership forward in the direction of the visions and missions of EWTG. Please encourage your friends and co-workers to join EWTG today by applying online at EWTG.org.

Best Regards,
Dokpe Ogunsanya

Scholarship Fund: An Untapped Resource

EWTG offers many benefits: training, networking opportunities, coaching, mentoring, leadership development and scholarship opportunities.

The scholarship program was developed to assist members with both personal and professional development. We know that training is always the first thing that is cut or agency funds are limited. By creating this scholarship program we saw this as an opportunity to afford our members a financial resource as well as an opportunity to partner with Leadership Women to make sure women in state government would be a part of this wonderful program. In addition, we provide conference registration assistance.

I have been a beneficiary of this program and I am thankful for the tuition assistance received. We all set goals and create bucket lists of training or certifications that we would like to have. Here is your golden opportunity to get started. All we ask is that you give back to the organization.

First Quarter 2016 scholarship applications are due March 31, 2016.

executive success teams

One of the topics our February luncheon speaker, Craig Pedersen, addressed was developing your own emotional intelligence quotient (EQ), and one of the ways he listed to do this was through peer mentoring. What better way to do this than by being a member of a EWTG EST?! This year we will be highlighting the experiences of a few ESTs in the newsletter to showcase this important benefit of being a member of EWTG.

I was a member of an EST whose core group was together for eight years. During this time, we met monthly from 6:00-8:00 pm. Locations varied, from an executive board room in an office building for the first year, to La Madeleine for two years, to a few scattered restaurants, and finally settling on Whole Foods upstairs for the final two years. Some of us wanted to eat dinner, and we found that if we could obtain and pay for the dinner at a buffet location like La Madeleine or Whole Foods and not be consumed by ordering and paying for food, we had more time to visit.

community service

Easter Egg Hunt

This spring EWTG is jumping into two community service projects serving the children and women of the Austin Community. EWTG will again partner with Easter Baskets of Love to distribute Easter baskets to the children at Huston – Tillotson University’s Community Egg Hunt. During this same time, we will be collecting handbags for Travis County Sheriff’s Office and Handbags for Hope.

Huston-Tillotson University Easter Egg Hunt is Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. The Community Egg Hunt has roughly 200 kids who attend and participate in the egg hunt and Easter basket give away. This event is fun for the whole family and is free to the public. Huston-Tillotson is located at 900 Chicon Street, Austin TX 78702.

Interested members should email Tamala Fletcher by March 20, 2015.

Handbags for Hope

Handbags for Hope is a project sponsored by the Texas Advocacy Project to put information on domestic violence into more women's hands.

At the upcoming luncheon, members are encouraged to donate a new or gently used handbag to the Texas Advocacy Project in Partnership with the Travis County Sherriff’s Office

social media - twitter

Using Social Media to Your Advantage

Hopefully, you've all joined us on LinkedIn, but if you're still feeling unsure about diving into social media, how about just dipping your toes into Twitter? One of the beauties of Twitter is that you can sample its goodness without making a commitment.

You don't need a Twitter account to indulge a little, so what's your pleasure?

Twitter is the quintessential news feed. Each post (aka a "tweet") is a snippet of 140 characters or less. As you scroll, you decide which posts are worth your time.

Now that you've indulged a little, or maybe a lot, wouldn't it be nice if all your interests had been in one list instead of separate lists? Yes. Yes, it would. And that's the other beauty of Twitter: you can pick what you want to see, and see it all in one place. But for that, you need an account.
the affiliates - ewtg branches

Currently there are four EWTG Affiliates. These ladies are up and running promoting EWTG’s mission, values and vision of empowering women to success. In the coming months, we will introduce you to our Affiliates. In the meantime, you can find them on Facebook and Twitter. Reach out and see what they are doing in their area.

  • The Brazos Valley Affiliate is under the leadership of Brenda Grays.
  • The San Antonio Affiliate is under the leadership of Aimee Sharp
  • The Dallas Affiliate is under the leadership of Susan Rossiter
  • The Houston Affiliate is under the leadership of Denisha Ellis

Keep watching and supporting our sisters in the spirit of EWTG. If you are visiting their area see what they are doing and join in the activities.

Quarterly Scholarships

EWTG scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis to those wanting an opportunity for professional advancement or personal growth. All interested members are encouraged to apply; financial need is not a factor. Take a moment to treat yourself to a course you have been putting off or a conference you would love to attend.

Guidelines for qualifying for a scholarship and applications are available on the EWTG website at ewtg.org. Email your 2016 first quarter application to the Scholarship Committee by 5:00 p.m. on March 31, 2016.

EWTG Board Meetings

The EWTG Board holds its monthly meetings at the Mitte Carriage House in Austin on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The agenda for each meeting will be posted on EWTG's website by noon on the Monday before the meeting.

A summary of the board meeting minutes is also posted on the website.

Committee Volunteers Needed

Please look over the Committee Descriptions on the EWTG website and consider becoming more active in the organization.

Participating on a committee is a great way to support EWTG, learn new skills and to meet other interesting executive women. As with so many things, "the more you give, the more you get."
