"Demographic, Socio-economic and Political Characteristics of Austin’s New City Council Districts"

Ryan Robinson, Demographer, City of Austin

Ryan Robinson, Demographer for the city of Austin is our featured speaker at the next EWTG Monthly Luncheon.  He will talk about how the Austin City Council, the city's governing body will change as citizens move from electing members on at a large ballot to single member districts.

The city of Austin is currently the largest city in the country with an at large city council and has been electing council members on at-large ballots since 1954.  History is now in the making as future Austin City Council members will be elected by single member districts which will create a more diverse council.

Make plans to attend the April 23rd luncheon to hear a fascinating presentation about the council districts and various demographics that will affect and change the face of the Austin City Council.  Ryan will talk about the history for moving to single-member districts, how the districts were drawn, and how the various socio-economic and political characteristics of the city will change.

Ryan Robinson is a native Austinite, graduating from Austin High and The University of Texas.  After working with the state’s General Land Office under Commissioner Mauro for just over a year, he attended The University of Georgia in Athens where he got a Masters degree in geography and met his wife.

Ryan began his demographic career as an enrollment forecaster and boundary planner for a large, rapidly growing suburban school system in Atlanta during the mid-80s.  Ryan started working for the City of Austin as a demographer in 1990 and has directed their demographics workprogram since 1995.

His current professional interests include data mapping and interpretation, population change, and the rise and fall of American cities.
