Claudia Stravato
1994 Woman of the Year

At the EWTG annual conference on November 21, Claudia Stravato was named the 1994 Woman of the Year. Congratulations, Claudia!

Claudia, Director of Professional Education, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, is a founder and past president of EWTG. She is also former Chief of Staff to Lt. Governor Bob Bullock. As one of the founders of EWTG, Claudia wrote the original constitution and by-laws. She also prepared and distributed the first EWTG newsletter prior to officers being elected and formal structuring of the organization. Claudia was a speaker and organizer for the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of EWTG. She has also been a workshop presenter at annual conferences and moderated two panel discussions at the 1994 annual conference.

Claudia has more than 25 years in public administration. She has extensive knowledge of state government organization, operation, and legislative activities. She is a proven leader and team builder. When asked how participation in EWTG has helped her in her career she writes: "It has helped to foster pride in the importance of public service and to become more aware of the important roles women play in government. It has provided me with a base of support and contact among women in key state positions whom I feel I can call on at any time for information, assistance, and support. I have commuted from Amarillo to my work for over l0 years. If I had not had the support and confidence of many women, and men, I could not have achieved this feat successfully. I owe a great deal to the confidence I gained through promoting the importance of women serving in top positions in state government."

Honorable mention goes to the following candidates who were nominated for the Woman of the Year Award: Susan Johnson, Director of Program Planning, Governor's Office; Lora Williams, Deputy Executive Director, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation; Jan Thomas, Director, Governor's Job Bank, Texas Employment Commission; and, Frankie F. Watson, Regional Director, Texas Rehabilitation Commission.

Special thanks to the judges who had a very difficult time choosing only one recipient from the talented and worthy candidates. The judges were: Ethelynn Beebe, Special Assistant, Policy Analysis, Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation; Mary Panella, Field Monitor/Consultant, Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services; Elaine Powell, Executive Director, Texas Incentive and Productivity Commission; and Rosie de Leon-McCrady, Personnel Specialist, Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services.
