Marian Sokol, Ph.D. MPH

Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas

Keep Calm and Carry On

By Karen Howard, EWTG Program Director

Leadership When the World is Quaking Around You... Leadership requires integrity, focus, dedication and resilience. But each of our lives have ups, downs, and inevitably times of crisis...including personal loss. What happens when the sun comes up as always, but you just cannot bounce back? This presentation will address situations, which includes grieving, when even leaders must take time to heal before they can move forward.

Marian Sokol is Executive Director of Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas, a nationally recognized Center in San Antonio serving more than 1000 grieving children, teens, parents and caregivers annually. Programs include individual counseling, peer support groups and camps, and the Grief Education Institute.

Prior to this position, Marian served as President of First Candle, a U.S. organization dedicated to promoting safe pregnancies and survival of babies through the first years of life. She worked for a decade with international organizations to reduce the risk of SIDS and stillbirth through education, research and advocacy. Prior to 2003, Dr. Sokol served 21 years as Founding Executive Director of Any Baby Can of Texas, a model support center for critically and chronically ill children. During the years she has held numerus appointments to state and national boards. She has chaired the National Advisory Committee for Childhood Vaccines, co-chaired the Board of International Stillbirth Alliance, and has been appointed to statewide commissions addressing prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome, and child abuse fatalities. Numerous awards which include recognition by the Texas Senate as a Yellow Rose of Texas, Texas Pediatric Society, and designation as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International.
