President's Corner

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of being reminded again of the quality of leadership our membership brings to us all and how fortunate I am to be a part of this organization. Our May luncheon speaker was not able to be present at the last moment, and some of our remarkable members, most notably Susan Durso and Joelyn Weeks, stepped in and gave us an impromptu inspirational program. They talked about how EWTG is as relevant today as it was when it was started in 1984 and about our years of providing opportunities for women to excel, to stretch and succeed, and to reach new heights. They also talked about their experiences with being members of Executive Success Teams and how that has made a significant difference in their lives. Susan’s team is well on its way to celebrating 25 years together if they have not already passed that milestone! This was a great lead-in promoting our very successful Executive Success Team kick-off event on June 8. Our president-elect, Deborah Shaw-Boatner, organized a truly unique and special time for us at the historic Dedrick-Hamilton House on East 11th Street. In addition to getting to see some African-American history and artwork, we enjoyed visiting around cocktail tables while eating some tasty catered appetizers.

Another special event that made me thankful to be a part of EWTG was our June 17th Affiliate Day in Bryan- College Station. Our Brazos Valley affiliate sisters arranged a day very like we would have experienced at Leadership Texas. They thought of everything, from nametags and water and snacks to maps and gift bags. We started with a tour of the George Bush Presidential Library, then had some down-time to check out historic downtown Bryan on our own, and ended with a fun-filled dinner and an inspiring presentation by the College Station Assistant Police Chief.

July will be another great month, with Patricia Hayes giving our July 12th mini-course, the food bank community service event on July 15th, and the luncheon on July 26th. And, on August 5, we have the opportunity through our Educational Events Committee to tour the historic 1855 Neill-Cochran House Museum.

Our Community Service activity for July is collecting food items and cash donations for the Central Texas Food Bank at the mini-course and working at a three-hour service event at the food bank on Saturday, July 15th. Afterwards, interested attendees can get together for lunch. Check the newsletter and website to register for this and all events.

Conference registration will be opening this month. The conference committee continues to make arrangements for a wonderful Sunday evening reception and a full Monday of speakers and workshops. Donations for the silent auction are being taken now, and we are looking for organizations and individuals who would like to be vendors.

A licensed attorney, Patricia has served as a respected policy confidante, advisor and strategist to executive leadership at the state and national level in governmental, private and non-profit organizations for over 25 years In addition to serving on the EWTG Board as this year’s Mini-Course Director, Patricia’s current community leadership engagements include serving as Board Chair of the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce and as a Community Champion on the Central Health Equity Policy Council.

Patricia has taken her expansive professional experiences to create a diverse set of online courses and training focused on advocacy and women’s empowerment, including the online course series, ”Investing in the Bank of YOU: Designing Your Personal Strategy for Success.” She is currently leading a 30-Day Consistency Challenge, where the goal is to regain focus and discipline in ONE area of your life, one day at a time. The mini-course starts at 11:30, the program begins at noon, and lunch is served at 11:45 a.m. To help you make the most of your lunchtime, EWTG will have pizza from Eastside Pies, fresh green salad, a drink and dessert for $10 per person, or you can bring your own lunch. Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS)

Porter Wilson was appointed the executive director of the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) on June 1, 2015. During his presentation, he will discuss changes made by the 85th Legislature that will directly and indirectly affect your retirement and health benefits.

Under Porter’s guidance, ERS administers programs that provide retirement, deferred compensation, and flexible benefits for more than 225,000 state employees and retirees. ERS is entrusted with an investment portfolio of more than $26 billion and is responsible for managing the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program, which provides health care coverage to more than 500,000 state and higher education employees, retirees, and their families.

Porter most recently served as associate vice chancellor for governmental relations for the Texas Tech University System. He has spent most of his career, from 1996 to 2014, serving as Chief of Staff for Texas State Senator Robert Duncan. In that role, Porter worked closely with ERS on legislation related to state employee benefits, demonstrating a strong commitment to ERS members and retirees, as well as keen knowledge of state government, benefits, and budgets. Before leading Duncan’s Senate staff, Porter was his legislative assistant when he served in the Texas House of Representatives.

In his years in state government, Porter earned the respect of lawmakers, colleagues, and other associates. He has long-term relationships throughout Texas state government and with employee and retiree associations and organizations. He received the Texas Public Employees Association’s Public Service Award for the 83rd Legislative Session and was named the Department of Public Safety Officers Association’s Legislative Staffer of the Year for both the 82nd and 83rd sessions.

Porter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from the University of Texas at Austin.

The luncheon is held at the Austin Woman’s Club, 708 San Antonio Street, Austin, TX 78701 - view map (ample free parking located at the rear of the building at Nueces & 10th Street). Networking begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. The program starts at noon and concludes at 1:00 p.m. The cost is $20 for EWTG members and $25 for guests.  Remember to register early for the luncheon in anticipation of a “full house,” thank you!

The Affiliates – A Day To Remember

On Saturday, June 17, 2017, EWTG sisters from Austin, Houston, and the Brazos Valley came together in the epicenter of Aggieland. We toured the George H.W. Bush Library, spent some time and money in Downtown Bryan, and enjoyed great fellowship and food at Café Capri.

College Station Police Department Assistant Chief Brandy Norris spoke at dinner and held the room captivated from the beginning to the end of her presentation. She discussed the traits of a leader that could be applied across all industries through a presentation detailing an event that occurred in College Station and that ended the watch of Constable Brian Bachmann on August 13, 2012.

We were very pleasantly surprised by a breath-taking rendition of "I Hope You Dance" as a departing farewell from Deborah Clark of the Houston Affiliate.

Those who won the door prizes took home coffee from the Brazos Valley, bath accessories made in Texas, wine donated by Brazos Valley's Peach Creek Vineyards, and a goody bag donated by the City of Bryan. However, we all walked away with our hearts filled with joy and our minds filled with memories of a wonderful day spent getting to know new members we had not previously met and fostering established relationships.

Community Service Committee  - July Central Texas Food Volunteer Event 

Capital Area Food Bank LogoJust a friendly reminder the community service committee will be volunteering at the local Capital Area food bank on July 15, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Please register online for this volunteer event.  You can help - there are still six slots available, and we would love to fill them all.

Come prepared to serve. Remember, you’ll be on your feet, moving around, so please dress comfortably. Jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers or work boots are perfect. For your safety, open toe shoes and sleeves shirts are not allowed. Helping others can help you: a smile and a warm heart is a good side-effect of service.

The Conference Committee is working diligently to host another exceptional event. Our theme for the 31st Annual EWTG Professional Development Conference is “Bold Leadership: Courage, Confidence, Compassion.” There are 36 Registration graphicdynamic presenters for our workshops that offer training on leadership development, program management, organizational change, and much more. Attendees gain practical and hands-on practice in the sessions; they will also gain the opportunity to network and to experience the views of two keynote speakers. A fun-filled reception Sunday evening that you won’t want to miss is also in the works.

Educational Event – Take a Guided Tour of Historic Neill-Cochran House Museum
Neill-Cochran House MeseumThe Educational Events Committee has arranged a 45-minute tour of the Neill-Cochran House Museum at noon on Saturday, August 5, 2017.   The Neill-Cochran House Museum preserves and reflects the experience of some of Austin’s earliest residents. One of the oldest houses in Austin, built in 1855 by renowned entrepreneur and builder Abner Cook, the house and the collections it displays shed light on the local, individual, and political history of our always-growing city.

The museum is located at 2310 San Gabriel Street, a few blocks west of The University of Texas Campus. Parking is available free in the museum lot, accessible via 23rd street in between Leon and San Gabriel. For those who are so inclined, we’ll start at 10:30 at Cream Whiskers bakery at 2222 Rio Grande, two blocks away, for coffee and a treat and then all meet at the Museum at 11:50 a.m. so that we can enter together for the tour.

If you like history, you will enjoy a relaxed morning and early afternoon with friends visiting this house. Please register in advance so we know to expect you. Family and friends are also welcome if pre-registered.

Executive Success Team - Reception

EST Reception photoThe 2017 Executive Success Team (EST) “Kick-off Reception” was held on Thursday, June 8, at the historic Dedrick-Hamilton House “The Little Yellow House” on East 11th Street in Austin. All of the EWTG members and guests in attendance, including representatives from existing teams, past presidents, and new members, had an enjoyable evening.  While browsing the photographs in the venue, members were able to read about accomplishments of members of the Austin African American community. Our guests were treated to a fine array of drinks and appetizers professionally presented by Janie Spears, whose business is “A Touch of Class”. Some of our members won gifts and EWTG swag during the business card drawing.

During our ice breaker, we shared business cards and something unique about each of us. We had a very lively and enlightening discussion about the beginning of our careers/work lives or about our extracurricular activities and our current positions in state/local government or private industry. Several of the ladies’ first jobs were in the fast food industry – including one who had a teenage crush on Colonel Sanders! There was a wide variety of great adventures, including another of us who had hiked up the north side of the Grand Canyon. The common denominator was that these women EST Reception photoworked jobs paying minimum/low wages on their way to their current professional and managerial jobs. These are some of the topics and conversations along with other topics on leadership and organization that you will experience if you are a member of an EST team.

If you are a new member or an existing member and you are interested in participating in an EST program this year, please complete this short survey (include the link from last month’s article) by July 31. The Mentorship Committee will sort you into teams based on your responses, so the more information you provide, the better match we can make for you. Thanks to President Clare Dyer, Past President Connie Williams, and Janie Spears (“A Touch of Class”) for helping with the event and to Past President Mary Castleberry for pitching in when she arrived. Special thanks to Board member Patricia Hayes for securing the Dedrick Hamilton House and to the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to use this historic venue.

If you have not had an opportunity to visit “The Little Yellow House” located in the East Austin corridor (walking distance to Franklin’s BBQ), you should add it to your places to see. The ’House’ at 912 East 11th Street was built around EST Reception photo1880, anchors the African American Cultural and Heritage Facility next door, and serves as a “gateway” to Austin’s booming East Side Cultural and Heritage District. Be sure not to miss the tile mural “Reflections” by Reginald Adams.

Quarterly Scholarships

EWTG scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis to those wanting an opportunity for professional advancement or personal growth. All interested members are encouraged to apply; financial need is not a factor. Take a moment to treat yourself to a course you have been putting off or a conference you would love to attend.

Guidelines for qualifying for a scholarship and applications are available on the EWTG website at ewtg.org. Email your 2017 third quarter application to the Scholarship Committee by 5:00 p.m. on September 29, 2017.

The EWTG Board holds its monthly meetings at the Mitte Carriage House in Austin on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The agenda for each meeting will be posted on EWTG's website by noon on the Monday before the meeting.
